I’m Donyana Msarwe. I create abstract paintings by listening to what begins to emerge before it has words: a sensation, a movement, a memory of light.
On the canvas, these impressions take form. Lines intertwine and unravel, circles gather movement around them, and layers of color reveal and conceal one another. Defined shapes meet freely worked textures, creating a language of connections, cycles, and transformation.
I paint freehand using only brushes, without stencils, a compass, or tracing around objects. Even the circles and geometric forms are built through the movement of my hand. Their precision and the subtle variations from one line to the next are part of my personal signature.
I’m drawn to the meeting point between the visible and the unseen. In some works, everything gathers around a center; in others, movement seems to continue beyond the edges of the canvas. I follow these relationships until each painting finds its own rhythm and presence.
For me, a painting is a place to encounter something that has yet to be named. I leave room for each viewer, for new meanings, and for details that only emerge when we return.
Donyana is the name I sign on my paintings. It is also the language taking shape between them.
